Braces have traditionally been considered mainly for children and teens.  Today, more and more adults are becoming aware of the fact that orthodontic treatment is not restricted to children.  Although treatment on adults may take a bit longer, great results can be achieved.  With the development of less visible, more effective braces, and the introduction of Invisalign, orthodontic treatment is appealing to many more adults.  The length of your treatment depends on the severity of your problem.  Appointments are usually only 20 minutes long and are generally scheduled every 8-12 weeks, so your schedule is minimally interrupted.

 

Many adults choose braces to treat orthodontic problems that were not corrected in childhood.  Nowadays, more and more adults are choosing clear aligners treatment (Invisalign).  Straight teeth are also much easier to maintain and clean than crowded or crooked teeth.  Having straight teeth will help you avoid tooth decay, eventual gum disease, and potential tooth loss.  Some adults are advised to get braces to correct their bite or misalignment of their jaws.  Correcting these problems can improve speech and chewing, and reduce wear on your teeth and stress on the supporting bone and jaw joints.

 

Adults may have experienced some breakdown or loss of their teeth and the bone that supports the teeth.  Orthodontic treatment may be only a part of the overall treatment plan.  Coordination with an oral surgeon, periodontist, endodontist, and family dentist may also be required.  In some cases, your dentist may advise you to get orthodontic treatment before tooth restorations such as crowns, bridges, and implants.
